Anímate Summer Academy

Summer is a time when many students are in need of additional academic support in order to not regress academically, and is also a time when families need the most support since the school community is closed. Each June, LaAmistad, The Westminster Schools and St. Martin's Episcopal School partner together to help continue the academic success of LaAmistad students.

LaAmistad students are highly encouraged to attend this camp, and other students from outside of the LaAmistad family are also invited to fill the remaining slots. Campers arrive to each of the locations on buses promptly at 8:30 am each morning after being picked up from their LaAmistad Afterschool locations. Campers spend the majority of the day immersed in academic subject areas such as language arts, reading, and math. Students also are able to participate in more traditional summer camp activities like swimming, participating in a variety of sports, and taking part in arts and crafts projects. By making these recreational activities available to students who are normally economically deprived of these sports, it allows them to experience the same activities that their more affluent classmates experience, thus building confidence and a sense of belonging.

After a long day of hard work and play, the buses then pick up the students at 2:30pm to return them to their respective sites. Students leave the camp each summer with their academic skills pushed to the next level, but also leave the camp with positive memories and relationships to help carry them through the next school year. Many of the students who attend Animate without belonging to LaAmistad, go on to later join LaAmistad once a new program opens in their area or more slots open at current locations.
