Serving Afterschool students online and in-person in 2021
This year, in order to ensure the health and safety of our students, families, and volunteers, LaAmistad Afterschool will be hosted online via the ZOOM platform as well as in-person.
Across twelve partner locations throughout the metro Atlanta area, LaAmistad Afterschool operates with a pair of important goals in mind. The primary objective of afterschool is to increase positive academic outcomes for the under-resourced Latino students we serve. Secondly, LaAmistad Afterschool seeks to instill students with virtues, convictions, and study habits that will serve them well throughout their academic careers and beyond.
With the support of parents, volunteers, and staff, students receive one-on-one tutoring and homework assistance as well as monthly skill assessments to track their educational progress. Class sizes are kept small to maintain the individualized tutoring, a staple of LaAmistad Afterschool. After homework is complete, students work to sharpen their academic skills with reading, writing and arithmetic required daily. Keeping with LaAmistad’s holistic approach to education, students participate in activity time and receive a healthy on-site snack before every session.
Students are also invited to participate in a variety of life enrichment activities with our partners throughout Atlanta. Opportunities have included: visiting the High Museum, attending a Braves games, touring colleges, and participating in the Latino Youth Leadership conference to name a few.
More than just stellar students, LaAmistad Afterschool’s second objective is to mold afterschool participants into moral, upstanding adults. Manners and virtues are tightly woven into the Afterschool curriculum, with weekly lessons and activities designed to instill students with the confidence necessary to follow their dreams.
